Issue to get out of my head:

with this website so close to being at presentation standard ( well what ive lowered my standards to) yet I am struggling with how to articulate the contributing pages of the website as a whole. The feature hom epage is the map, the next page is the 'about' window which I intend on constructing text which portrays the idea, function and purpose of the website but without giving too much away. This text I would like to compliment the title/ URL more so than the video content.


1. do I make this text cheesey gag material

eg: "...soar as free as a bird through the landscape dunedin has to offer.... swoop towards areas of the city for a closer exploration....

2. do I make it clean and crisp

eg:"... Navigate your way around Dunedin using the map tools, clicking to zoom in or out and panning 360. Click on the markers to play a location specific video....."

I've shot over ten videos now...getting there. The origional goal was 30 videos, then i thought well i may as well have 20 good ones i'm happy with for assessment and then upload more post assessment.

the science and art day was fun, short 10min presentations from artists, scientists and in-between people. Great to hear from cross-disciplines with relating themes. My favorite was the guy from the oceans simulations gig. His first few slides were of the earth and the marked portions of the oceans which have never seen the light of the sun therefore very largely un-explored which is very refreshing after spending a lot of time on Google maps exploring the world.

after being so immersed in html this semester I get excited when its mentioned, its nice to see html used in an art context instead of a commercial function.


With this exhibition I liked the use of space in context. Its obvious yes. I found the navigation of the site limiting because my first experience was not making an extra click on the work to 'activate' it. I saw the image accompanied with the text like you would see in a gallery but fell short on the full experience untill later which put a whole new layer of movement, time, space and in some cases a further context through the work.

Sudhirs sound performance

The performance in the museum was very interesting, it was a loose chance for Carmen, Joe and myself to create a sound in a public place and work with visuals along with a bodily action from Sudhir. The sound got pretty funky because both Carmen and I come from art background, it also got loud and psychedelic once didgeridoo and synth combined resonating through the top open floor of the museum. Joe seemed to hold back maybe due to his music background or whether he was paying more attention to the visuals. you could say we got carried away in the performance of aspect

after the sound seminar a few weeks ago i was interested in the ideas of invasive sound. An example i could use was the translation of visuals to audio. The image in this post depicts a view of the mega mitre 10 store/warehouse from a Waverley street. the image is a low resolution screen shot from google street view.
the below image is the original and the top image has had saturation manipulation to intensify the drastic changes in colour. this could be compared to a Kandinsky painting, with the synesthetic nature.


this weekend i am involved with a sound and painting performance at the museum, i am playing my didgerido with a few others on different instruments. i will update that performance next week eh!

it is the first day back at school and the first of 4 weeks remaining untill assesment on the 13th of november.

Today i have tidies up the design of my web site and now blieve it is time to start blasting out little videos asap!!!
i have begun selecting the locations. the next stage is writing a coherent description of my intention of the shoot and any equipment, props, costumes i may need.

tourist weekend #2

One specific part of my trip (should I say) was reccomended by su. It was a eXtremely immersive cinematic tourist snap taster of the whole of New Zealand in 7mins. The ride at NZ's national museum Te Papa was called:

..... So i thought that it was a well rounded take on stereotypical tourism NZ. It covered all areas of perception or as how nz is presented to the tourism market overseas... bungee jumping, adventure, bush land, clean, grren, nature, animals....and then out of left field the viewer takes on the point of view as a maori warrior batteling the early settlers in a brutal war- nutty!



There were so many things and ideas going on with this ...installation? interactive cinema? tourist information booth? roller coaster?

some of these ideas I thought related closely to a theory class i took last year called 'cinematic issues in contemporary art'..... some key ideas were the crossing between modern media such as film and video from cinema space to galleries. The notions of bodliy awareness were/are said to be present out of the blackened cinema and in galleries where your body is more involved in the work or one is conscious of the space you are in.. in this case being tossed around infront of a screen you were defenitely aware you were there but was not comfortable or more importantly immersive.

tourist weekend

I took a trip to Wellington, the capital of Aotearoa. I have only been once before so I there were a lot of new things and aspects of the city to explore...and document.

the last time ivisited was on a summer trip and i was equiped with my little HDV camera(not that I got much video within wellington city). I recorded a strong realistic perspective(sound and vision, colours) documents which reflect the experience through high quality digital devices. Being digital and having long (virtually unlimited) video tapes I could record for long periods.


This time I lugged up an old medium format camera which i borrowed from Allan in the photography department. I only took up one film- 12 shots- because i'm a bit cheap, and i thought by time i take a picture and get around to developing etc, i wont really have the energy to do it on mass. so 12 shots were enough.

...............I've included in this post the test strips from a few photographs on this roll...........

I have been chipping away slowly with my web page, a lot of trial and error testing and now more design based CSS work.

I have been thinking a lot about the presentation of the web site and how it should look from a tourist/ professional perspective, and also from a creative/ artsy perspective. I want to website to look slick and 'trustworthy' (but its function is still to inform sites in Dunedin).

This also goes with the name of my website and the logo. at the moment it's Explore Dunedin with a silhouetted albatross. Cheesey, yes. I think i have to get over every cheesey thing about this website because tourists and or the GENERAL public will be able to relate better to a neutral website, but I still want it to grab the viewer visually.

-make a decision on the video player for the website
-decide whether to persue changing the google markers to my own icons.
-tweak general design, make nice buttons .
-make a couple more info type pages.

installing work

I have been thinking of my work and its context in relationship to a gallery presentation.
My work has its own site specific space which is in the world wide web, in a gallery it wouldn't be in its true element. Although it would work it wouldnt portray the idea and intentions.

i've just had the idea of installing a kiosk style plyth, monitor, mouse object in the gallery.
This would give a clearer idea of tourism and pre-knowledge for future experiences. The Kiosk would create a less cinematic work than a large projection and create a more intimate interaction.

The idea was had a glimse of realisation after I saw an old letter box/ clothing bin styled box at the tip yesterday.

searching space

today team BFA3 are searching for a suitable place to exhibit for our November show.
We have thought about getting an unused shop/ retail space.
there have been some which look.




.....so after having a look at none i think it will be more suitable and easy to construct a show. Although it is a dream of mine to rent retail space for very short amounts of time( 3-5days of a one off gallery).

none was looking good to incorporate the 4 of us, maria needing a dark room, alone and noise cancelling, but i think we're pretty flexable. good space and i got a 35mm film from the basement

ok so This site is getting a bit of progress. I now have learnt how to ;

embed a google map in html
set the map to satellite,roadmap etc,
adjust the zoom,
crop map image,
plot markers,
customise marker image,
add info window to multiple markers,

...but i cant add multiple videos to these info windows!
grrrr

edwina has been of some help.



i must continue to think about these videos, sounds...i intend on including in the site which will ultimately be the content of my work.

portraying the ideas of- Dunedin city in the foriegn internet perspective, an informative view, interesting, cultural, anthropological, historical.

blogging has been slow lately, I dont know if its an indication of how un-productive i've been or whether i've been too productive with other stuff to even think about blogging.


This week;

Install my new prints in gallery space,
Shoot a new take of Jumbo for mothra,
read and research heaps on google maps API,

I wouldnt mind doing more research on art and artists who make work that I can think about to create more depth to my work, i'm feeling a bit flat.

aw and talk to my lovely lecturers about my films and projects.

small embeded films and stuff

I cant wait to get my shit sorted and start shooting mini movies. My current goal is to produce 25 short films for my website which I am also building currently... grah. I almost feel I need the website to be finished in order for these films to begin for the exhibition space is important, very much so site specific electronic art installation.

Another question which I have been puzzling over a lot is how and what style of film should I be creating. Drama, fictions, arty/ abstract, remoscope-ish, narrative, dococumentary (doco and narrative are two words which i'm thinking very differently following from our guest speaker Stephen Downes from the natural history doco gig in town) .

I also intend on making films with audio only, no picture, and screening the film in a cinematic space.
